Mother Day’s Sermon

A Mother’s Faith Is Contagious

2 Timothy 1:5

A drill sergeant was frustrated in his efforts to make a soldier out of a certain recruit.  The trainee lagged behind on marches, used any excuse to go on sick call, grumbled constantly about food, and never made his cot up properly.

But one day, a noticeable change took place in the young man's attitude.  When asked to what he attributed the soldier's change in attitude, the drill sergeant explained, "Threats and punishment didn't work, so I had to resort to the ultimate weapon: I called his mother.

This rather humorous story reminds us of the PROFOUND & POWERFUL INFLUENCE that a mother has on her children.

This brings us to the lesson today, A MOTHER'S CONTAGIOUS FAITH influences her children.

     A.  Mothers of Faith Have Changed the Course of History

          1.  The mother of Moses spared the great deliverer's life.

          2.  The mother of Samuel dedicated him to the Lord before

                his birth.

          3.  The mother of John and Charles Wesley gave birth to a

                revival.

     B.  Who Was the mother of Eunice?

          1.  Lois, her name means Desirable, a devout Christian.

          2.  Lois brought faith to her daughter, Eunice.

          3.  Eunice, her name means Good Victory, brought faith to

her son Timothy, who became a blessing to Paul.

     C.  Faithful Mothers Start Chain Reactions of Faith.

Let’s look at three movements that will demonstrate to us regarding A

Mother’s Faith Is Contagious!

     I.  A MOTHER’S FAITH MAY SPREAD TO HER CHILDREN

          1.  We do not know when Lois came to faith in Christ.

          2.  We do know that at some point she knew Him as Savior.

               a.  She understood she was a sinner.

               b.  She grasped the concept of grace.

               c.  She responded in faith to God's love.

          3.  We know Lois' faith was genuine (unfeigned).

          4.  We know that she shared her faith with her daughter.

          5.  Eunice saw Christ in her mother and believed.

          6.  What are you doing to win your children to Christ?

II.  A MOTHER’S FAITH MAY SPREAD TO HER GRANDCHILDREN

          1.  Eunice gave birth to Timothy.

Undoubtedly Lois and Eunice had high hopes for Timothy

at his birth.

The meaning of the name that Eunice gave her son is

"Honoring God”.

          2.  How would these two women reach young Timothy?

               a.  They did so by demonstrating genuine faith in their lives.

               b.  They did so by their prayers, examples, and teaching.

               c.  This is still how we reach those we love for Christ.

          3. Grandparents are special people to grandchildren.

          4.  Lois and Eunice succeeded in bringing Timothy to Christ.

          5.  Paul became God's answer to their prayers by leading

              Timothy in Jesus.

III.  A MOTHER’S FAITH MAY SPREAD TO FUTURE GENERATIONS

         1.  Timothy became Paul's companion in ministry.

                a.  Paul's letters to Timothy still spread the faith.

                b.  Timothy preached at Berea, spreading the faith.

                c. Timothy preached at Corinth and Macedonia,

spreading the faith.

d. Timothy preached at Ephesus and Rome, spreading the

faith.

          2.  Through Timothy's life, Lois is still spreading the faith today.

a. What a thrilling thought for every mother and grandmother.

               b.  A Christian mother's influence is unlimited.

1.     A MOTHER’S FAITH MAY SPREAD TO HER CHILDREN

2.    A MOTHER’S FAITH MAY SPREAD TO HER GRANDCHILDREN

3.     A MOTHER’S FAITH MAY SPREAD TO FURURE GENERATIONS
