SUNDAY SERMON: And The Giants Keep Coming
1 Samuel 17:40-47
The Giants Just Keep On Coming!
Every day of our lives we run into our own giants. These giants come in different sizes and different types. These giants, these problems always seem to show up un-invited. And let me just say you do not have to be 18 to experience problems in this life.
We make the mistake of thinking that our youth do not have problems.
Young people have problems that many older people have never had to deal with. Peer pressure, bullies, dope dealers, no work ethics – hard work is a crime today.
*Use to be a time when crack was a hole in the wall.
*Use to be a time when coke was a soft drink.
In fact, it seems like problems get worse and worse, that is why we need to spend more time encouraging our youth instead of getting on their case every time you see them.
Every time we turn around, we battle giants. Giants at school, giants at home, we even battle giants in the church house Bro. And Sis. All around us are giants. If it is not one giant, it’s another. The Giants Just Keep On Coming!
When we look at the lesson, the odds looked like it was stacked up against David. Things did not look too good. In fact, the situation looked mighty bad.
If we are honest today, we feel like that sometimes. Sometimes we feel like we just cannot win for losing. This giant was almost ten feet tall. Then on top of that this giant did not have a problem letting everybody know how bad he was. A problem always is bigger when you let that problem convince you of how bad it is.
Many days and nights Goliath let folks know how bad he was. He let the people of Israel know that I am Goliath. If you do not know, you better ask somebody. I have never been beat before. I have crushed armies with my single hand. The Israelite Army was defeated before the battle was even fought.
Quite often we do the same thing, we let the giants in our lives whoop us before the battle even starts. Many young people have permitted giants to defeat them. You have allowed the giants of sex, the giants of drugs, the giants of marijuana, whatever your giant is, your giant has convinced you that you do not have the power of Jesus. Young people whatever your giant is, let that giant know that you are in control, and that Jesus is sovereign in your life. Young people you need to realize that greater is he that is in me than he that is in the world.
We can learn a lesson from David. David did not give up when the giants came in his life. David purposed in his mind that I will bless the Lord at all times and his praise shall continually be in my mouth (Ps. 34:1).
David remembered that God was faithful in the past. Young brothers and sisters David had hope in a hopeless situation. In verse 37, David said, “The LORD delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear.” Goliath is just like any other animal that I have faced in the past.
Rather we know it or not we have a past that is filled with God’s faithfulness, God’s mercy, and God’s goodness.
Apostle Paul conveyed in Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me”.
HOW DO WE KILL A GIANT?
I.
YOU HAVE TO EXHIBIT THE RIGHT MOTIVES
I do not believe David's heart was motivated by two things only. I do not think it was the
money, the fame, or the power. I believe he was motivated by:
A. The glory of God - v. 26, 29, 36 - Goliath was mocking the God of Israel and David could
not stand the thoughts of that happening.
B. By his role as the newly anointed king - 1 Sam. 16:1-12 - Just as David had protected his
sheep from the attacks of the lion and bear, v. 34-36, he would protect his Israel from the attack of Goliath.
C. When you see the giants that you are facing in your own life, ask yourself this question:
Why do I want this giant defeated? You should have two proper motives:
1. A Desire for God's glory.
2. A Desire for God's plan to be fulfilled in your life.
D. One of the primary reasons God used David to defeat Goliath was because David had the
the right motives for wanting that giant dead.
I submit to you this morning that the reasons we do not defeat Our giants is because we do not have the right motives.
To kill a giant, you must exhibit the right motives.

II.
YOU HAVE TO EMBRACE THE RIGHT METHODS
A. When David's plan to kill the giant reached King Saul, He told David that he could not do the job v. 33. King Saul saw that David was determined, and tried to suit David up in his own armor v. 38. David, however rejected Saul's armor because it had not been proven in his life. David was determined that he would go into battle with the armor that had always worked for him in the past.
B. David did not know a thing about shields, spears, and swords. He was not schooled that way. He knew that God had always given him victory in the past, was the same God who will come through in the present. So, David only took his staff, his sling, five smooth
stones, and Sovereign God.
YOU HAVE TO EMBRACE THE RIGHT METHODS
C. Church, you can try any method you want defeat your giants. You can attend the latest seminars. You can read the newest books. You can climb on the latest bandwagon. You can pray, and pray. You can strive for a purpose driven life. But, when it is all said and done, giant killing gets simple. It all comes down to faith.
Warren Weirsbe said, "Giants are the bumps we climb on."

III.
YOU HAVE TO EXPECT THE RIGHT MIRACLES
A. David walked into that valley in an impossible situation. He was doubted by some. Yet, his faith allowed David to do everything that fear denied Saul and the others. David declared victory before the battle even started v. 43-47
B. David engaged the giant in battle and won the victory over him! Faith stayed with God and with what always worked. Never underestimate that power of faith in your battles. You must
expect the right miracles.
C. Your giants may not fall the instant you exercise faith in God. Do not let that cause you to lose hope! It may look like you are outgunned, outnumbered and in an impossible situation.
It looked that way for Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. It looked that way for Daniel.
