SERMON #5: JESUE IS ALL WE NEED
Colossians 2:8-15
Part I
What happens to a church when the Light of the world (Jesus Christ) is hidden? Darkness in a form of false teaching seeps its way into the hearts of people. Are you doing your part to warn the world of the consequences of rejecting Christ? There was a story about a bad train accident.
“Several years ago [there was] a terrible accident in which several youths were killed when their car was struck by a train. At the trial the watchman was questioned: ‘Were you at the crossing the night of the accident?’ ‘Yes, your honor.’ ‘Were you waving your lantern to warn of danger?’ ‘Yes, your honor,’ the man told the judge.
“But after the trial had ended, the watchman walked away mumbling to himself, I’m glad they didn’t ask me about the light in the lantern, because the light had gone out’ ‘’
God has called the Christian believer to be a “watchman.” The challenge is to make sure our lights do not go out but shine brightly as a beacon of truth.
God doesn’t want us to be taken captive by philosophy and vain deceit based on tradition of men and elementary principles of the world rather than believing on Jesus alone (v. 2:8).
The word philosophy comes from the Greek words: PHILOS, which means “love,” and SOPHIA, which means “wisdom.” Philosophy is the love of wisdom. In this text, it refers to worldly wisdom, which is vain deceit, rather than the teachings of Christ.
How can we prevent ourselves and our loved one from being captured by the philosophy and vain deceit of an enslaving false teacher? By understanding that Jesus is all we need. We have three reasons: Today, Part I, we ill give the first reason Jesus is all we need!
I. HE IS ALL WE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT GOD v. 9
A. Why, according to verse 9, “For in Him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.” Christ is the source of reality and truth. Jesus Christ has the full nature and being of God just as God the Father has the full nature of God. God the Father and God the Son have the same being and nature, that of God. The word “fulness” means that not a single part of God’s nature is lacking in the nature of Christ.
B. The word “dwells” means to be at home, to be permanently settled and present. This tells us that…
Ø The fulness of God has always dwelt in Christ, even before He came to earth (John 1:1,18).
Ø The fulness of God dwelt in Christ when Christ was walking upon earth in a human body (John 1:14, 18). Everything our finite minds can comprehend about God is revealed in Jesus Christ. Jesus is all we need to know about God and:
Ø The fulness of God was not a temporary gift to Christ.
What does all this mean to us in practical day-to-day living that Christ is the “fulness” of God? It means two wonderful things.
· First, God is not far off in outer space someplace. God is not unconcerned with the world. God has not just created the world and wound it up, leaving it on its own to fly throughout space with man making out the best he can. God is interested and concerned with the world—so much so that he has come to earth to show how vitally concern He is.
· Second, God is love, not evil. Only God of evil would leave man in the dark where would have to grope and grasp and stumble about in order to find God. A God of love would reveal Himself and show man…
· The way to God
· The truth of God, man, and the world.
· The life that man is to live (John 14:6).
Jesus is all we need to know about God!
