Book of Colossians
SERMON # 2: LEARNING GOD’S WILL FOR YOUR LIFE
Colossians 1:9-14
Being all God wants you to be, nothing is more important than learning God’s will for your life. Therefore, Paul communicates to the Colossians he is praying they will be filled with the knowledge of his will (1:9c). The word filled (play-rah’-o) means “to be controlled by.” To be controlled by God’s will, Paul uses three words: knowledge, wisdom and understanding.
Where do we find the knowledge, wisdom, and understanding we need to discover God’s will? In the Bible! By studying God’s Word. “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness (2 Tim. 3:16).
The lesson today will be about God’s moral will: This refers to God’s commands and the standard for right and wrong, as revealed in the Bible and through His character. It includes things like loving your neighbor, being honest, and showing compassion.
Learning God’s will for your life is to be obedient to His moral will, as revealed in the Bible, which has at least four requirements.
I. Walk Worthily v. 10a
We must walk worthy of the Lord (v. 10a).
Ø The word “walk” means that we set our lives----our behavior and conduct---after Christ.
Ø The word “worthy” means to have the weight of something else or “of equal weight.” Therefore, if we are worthy, our ethics and integrity are equal to God’s standards. Our conduct is to conform to the will of God as much as the conduct of Christ.
Learning God’s will for your life:
1. Walk Worthily
II. Work Fruitfully v. 10b-c
If we walk worthily, our lives will be pleasing to the Lord and we will be
fruitful in every good work (v. 10b). This means we continuously bear fruit in our character and conduct. Also, being fruitful in every good work is pleasing to the Lord, then we fill the nine components of the fruit of the Holy Spirit (Gal. 5:22-23). Spiritual fruit is the by-product of a righteous life. Also, the Bible identifies spiritual fruit as leading people to Christ (1 Cor. 16:15).
As we grow and bear fruit, we will continually increase in the knowledge of God (v. 10c). Spiritual growth cannot occur apart from this knowledge. The evidence of Spiritual growth includes a deeper love for God’s Word.
Learning God’s will for your life includes:
1. Walk Worthy
2. Work Fruitfully
III. Withstand Mightily v. 11a-c
(tolerate, endure, standup)
As we increase in the knowledge of God’s Word and will is might, or strength (v. 11a). The more we know about God’s Word and His will, the more we are able to do all things through Christ, who strengthens us (Phil. 4:13). Patience and longsuffering. These terms are closely related and refer to the attitude one has during trials.
Ø Patience looks more at enduring difficult circumstances.
Ø Longsuffering looks at enduring difficult people.
Never forget this truth: Wherever God guides, He provides. He provides the spiritual power to accomplish His will. look what Paul says in Ephesians 6:10, “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.”
Learning God’s will for your life includes:
1. Walk Worthily
2. Work Fruitfully
3. Withstand Mightily
IV. Worship Thankfully v. 12-14
We can’t never be thankful enough for what God has done for us. There are at least three reasons to worship thankfully!
Ø God has given us an inheritance (v. 12). He has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance when we were saved. Look at the best part of our inheritance (Rev. 21:4).
Ø God has delivered us from the power of darkness (v. 13). Delivered us, the term means “to draw to oneself” or “to rescue,” and refers to the believer’s spiritual liberation by God from Satan’s kingdom.
Ø God has saved us and forgiven our sins (v. 14). You can call it Redemption.
