WE HAVE VICTORY IN JESUS

SERMON SERIES: IT'S TIME TO GROW UP 4

BOOK OF COLOSSIANS

MESSAGE: WE HAVE VICTORY IN JESUS

Colossians 2:13-- 15

Introduction: As we talk/understand Spiritual Warfare, we must start & end at

the cross of Christ. Satan has no right, authority over the believer no matter

what he may claim or contend. He is a troublemaker, trespasser on God's earth

and has claimed to be the king of the hill.

We have victory in Jesus because of THE VICTORY AT CALVARY! Satan has no

right, authority over the believer no matter what he may claim or contend. He

is a troublemaker, trespasser on God's earth and has claimed to be the king of

this Earth. Satan is not my king, master, lord, object of my allegiance or my

loyalty.

To believe He is the king of this world is treason to the Cross because Jesus

refused to bow down & worship Satan in the wilderness (Matt. 4:8-10. On

Calvary Jesus defeated Satan, came off the cross victorious over the devil and

his demonic blood.

I am painfully aware that there are many Christians who believe in Christ, but

who are not set free. How can we be free? This particular text tells us that

Jesus performed three redemptive acts for us on the Cross that we might be

free to experience the abundant life He alone gives. This is why we have victory

in Jesus!

I.

JESUS ENACTED FORGIVENESS

v. 13

The act of excusing or pardoning another in spite of his slights, shortcomings

and errors. As a Biblical expression, it means - forgiveness refers to God's

pardon of the sins of human beings.

A. Forgiveness in the new Testament is directly linked to Christ. His

sacrificial death on the cross and His resurrection. He was the morally

perfect sacrifice, the final and ultimate of all Old Testament sacrifices.

Since Jesus bore the law's death penalty against sinners, those who trust

in His sacrifice are freed from that penalty. By faith sinners are forgiven

---"justified”. We who are forgiven sin's penalty also die to its sin's

controlling power.

B. The enacting of forgiveness is simultaneous with being made alive. We

were dead in our trespasses, but now we are alive with Jesus. Only

through the union with Jesus can those hopelessly dead in their sins

receive eternal life. Thank God for Enacting forgiveness. WE HAVE

VICTORY IN JESUS!

II.

JESUS CANCELED OUR INDEBTEDNESS

v. 14

Wiped out the handwriting - referred to the handwritten certificate of debt

by which a debtor acknowledged his indebtedness. All people owe God an

unpayable debt for violating His law, and are thus under sentence of death

(Rom: 6:23).

A. Through Christ's sacrificial death on the cross, God has totally erased our

certificate of indebtedness and made our forgiven complete.

B. The Mosaic Law (which Paul's phrase symbolizes) put us in debt to God

with sin; this debt he has canceled by nailing it to the cross of Christ.

Christ has made full payment.

C. Believer's sins were all put to Christ's account, nailed to His cross as He

paid the penalty instead of us - satisfying the just wrath of God against

crimes requiring punishment in full. We have victory because Jesus

canceled our indebtedness.

III.

JESUS DISARMED OUR ETERNAL ENEMIES

v. 15

A. Made a public spectacle of His enemies-----triumphing over them openly.

The picture is that of a victorious Roman general parading his defeated

enemies through the streets of Rome.

B. Christ won the victory over the demon forces on the cross, where their

efforts to halt God's redemptive plan were ultimately defeated.

THANK GOD! WE HAVE VICTORY IN JESUS
