SUNDAY SERMON: WE MUST BE WITNESSES
Acts 1:8
Introduction: One day a small town prosecuting attorney called his first witness to the stand in a trial. The witness was a grandmotherly, elderly woman. He approached her and asked, “Mrs. Jones, do you know me?” The elderly woman responded, “Why, yes, I do know you Mr. Williams. I’ve known you since you were a young boy. And frankly, you’ve been a big disappointment to me. You lie, you cheat, you manipulate people and you talk about them behind their backs. Yes, I know you.”
The lawyer was stunned and there was whispering among the courtroom audience. Not knowing what else to do he pointed across the room and asked, Mrs. Jones, do you know the defense attorney?” The woman answered, “Why, yes I do. I’ve known Mr. Bradley since he was a youngster, too. I used to baby-sit him for his parents. And he, too, has been a real disappointment to me. He’s lazy, bigoted, and he has a drinking problem. Yes, I know him.”
Again, the courtroom was alive with whispering. At this point, the judge pounded his gavel until the courtroom came to silence and he called both lawyers to the bench. In a quiet voice, the judge said, “If either of you asks her if she knows me, I’ll throw you in jail for contempt in a flash!”
We see what kind of witness the elderly woman was, who didn’t filter what she says, but what kind of witnesses we must be? I am not asking what kind of courtroom witness you are, but what kind of Christian witness are you?
Today, I want to preach on the subject: WE MUST BE WITNESSES.
WHAT IS A WITNESS?
People who tells the truth about Christ! In Greek witness means, “one who dies for his faith”. You tell the truth no matter what happens to you.
I have three movement that will help us to be better witnesses:
I.
THE LORD’S WITNESSES TELL
WHAT THEY KNOW
II.
THE LORD’S WITNESSES TELL
ABOUT WHO THEY KNOW
III.
THE LORD’S WITNESSES KNOW
WHERE TO GO
